STATEMENT
Krisztián Tejfel’s painting practice explores attention, presence, and the experience of time. His works examine the relationship between humans and nature through visual structures shaped by repetition, imbalance, and slow, layered construction. Rather than presenting direct narratives, the paintings evoke emotional and psychological states that resist precise definition.
Tejfel’s artistic perspective was shaped early on by two contrasting environments. As a child, he spent long periods with his grandparents in the countryside, where everyday life followed the rhythms of nature. This experience fostered a lasting sensitivity to slowness, observation, and presence. At the same time, he grew up in the rapidly changing urban atmosphere of post-socialist Hungary during the 1990s. Skateboarding and hip-hop culture became important influences, opening new visual and social spaces connected to freedom, movement, and self-expression. Together, these experiences created an ongoing tension between natural rhythms and the accelerated pace of contemporary life.
This duality remains central to Tejfel’s work. Rather than treating these conditions as opposites, his paintings focus on the space that emerges between them. While remaining attentive to the shifting language of contemporary visual culture, his practice consistently seeks forms of perception that encourage slowness, concentration, and sustained attention. In this context, boredom appears not as absence, but as a quieter and more attentive state of awareness that has gradually disappeared from modern life.
His paintings develop intuitively through translucent layers and interconnected forms that emerge not from predetermined concepts, but from emotional and psychological states. Rather than unfolding through clearly separated series, his works evolve cyclically, with certain themes and formal questions returning repeatedly in altered forms. Repetition becomes not a return, but a process of transformation and deepening.
For Tejfel, painting is not merely a medium, but a form of presence. His works invite not only observation, but a slower experience that unfolds over time. They create open pictorial spaces that require concentration and presence, allowing for a more immersive and contemplative encounter.
