STATEMENT

The painting of Krisztián Tejfel explores the possibilities of experiencing attention, presence, and time. His works address the relationship between humans and nature not in an illustrative way, but as an inner structure: visual spaces emerge in which cyclic repetition, imbalance, and slow, layered formal construction become defining elements. These paintings do not necessarily tell stories, but evoke moods and inner states that are difficult to express through other means.

From early on, Tejfel's artistic thinking was shaped by a duality that continues to define his practice. As a child, he spent long periods with his grandparents, where daily life followed the rhythm of nature – a formative experience that revealed how time can be lived as presence rather than measured by purpose. At the same time, he grew up in an increasingly urban environment during Hungary’s post-communist transition, when a sudden influx of cultural energy emerged through the gaps left by collapsing systems. Skateboarding and hip-hop culture played a key role during this period, opening up new visual and social spaces and shaping his identity through experiences of freedom, community, and embodied presence. These influences further intensified an inner tension between the natural way of living and the fast-paced urban condition.

This duality – between quiet perception and the impulse-driven rhythm of the contemporary world – is not oppositional in Tejfel’s thinking, but mutually reflective. While he remains attentive to the current movements of visual culture, his painting practice consistently seeks spatial and temporal dynamics that invite deceleration, reorientation, and focused attention – both from the artist and the viewer. Boredom – often regarded today as an undesirable void – becomes, for Tejfel, a slower, quieter state of awareness: a kind of time once naturally woven into everyday life, when being present mattered more than constant reaction.

His paintings are often built from smaller and larger forms, thinly layered with washes, unfolding from emotional and mental states rather than from predefined concepts. The process is intuitive but not aimless: it belongs to a long-term, self-forming visual system. Rather than working in linear series, Tejfel develops in cyclical patterns – not as a deliberate method, but as an instinctive echo of natural rhythms. He returns to themes and formal questions over time, deepening and reframing them. This painterly thinking does not construct a “progression,” but a slowly condensing structure in which repetition becomes a new point of entry, not a return.

For him, painting is not merely a medium, but a form of presence. His works invite not just to be seen, but to be dwelt in; they do not simply communicate, but create space. In this sense, his paintings function as environments – not only optically, but mentally. This kind of pictorial space does not demand, but remains open: the viewer’s entry is not expected, but offered, requiring time and attention.
